Analysis of Fallacies Paper
Goal of the assignment: To explore various types of logical fallacies by identifying and analyzing
examples found in others’ arguments.
What to do: Read editorials, letters to the editor, news-related blogs, and news-related on-line
postings to find examples of any of the various types of fallacies discussed in class. Once you
have found the examples, name and define the fallacy that you think each example is guilty of,
and write a paragraph for each example in which you analyze why the example is guilty of the
fallacy.
You must provide at least four examples, and you must identify a total of at least three
different types of fallacies.
All of the examples must come from the last six months. You must provide a complete
bibliographic source citation for each example. For help on source citations, see
http://libguides.grossmont.edu/citation-help
Sample (note this sample contains only one example, but you must have at least four):
Example – When the Republican attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act
collapsed in March of this year, President Trump blamed Democrats. “‘We were very close, it
was a very tight margin. We had no Democrat support, no votes from the Democrats,’ Trump
said, flanked by Vice President Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price in
the Oval Office. ‘I think the losers are Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer because now they own
ObamaCare,’ the president added, referring to the House and Senate Democratic leaders.”
(Fabian, 2017).
Fallacy – Oversimplification, in which an argument ignores multiple possible causes for a
problem.
Analysis – Trump stated that the reason for the failure of the bill was opposition from
Democrats. He ignores other possible reasons why the legislation failed, such as the manner in
which the Republican congressional leadership rolled out the legislation, the failure to reach
out and include Democrats in crafting the legislation, the rush to bring the legislation to a vote,
and the negative reactions to the repeal by the American people, and the assessment of the
impacts of the bill on lost health insurance by the Congressional Budget Office. While Trump
may have a point that Democratic opposition played a role in the legislation’s failure, his failure
to consider the many reasons why the Democrats opposed the legislation demonstrates a lack
of understanding of the need to work strategically in order to get things done in Washington.
