interviewed and what you will be covering in this essay.
II. Body: The body is by far the longest part of the paper and
should highlight everything from Step 3: Reflection (listed
above). I would encourage you to make a separate
paragraph for each of the four events/experiences/etc. In
each paragraph, you should describe the
event/experience, explain how it shaped their identity, and
describe how it might have influenced their communication.
It is important that you give direct quotes from your
interview to support your reflection. You are also
encouraged to pull content from your textbook.

this assignment? How can it be used in the future? What
did this tell you about communication, perception, and
self-concept?

paper. What did you take away from this assignment? How
can it be used in the future?

During the interview, your goal is to learn about the person and
what experiences/events/people have shaped their identity and
influenced their communication. TIP: Think of “Journal #2” where
you were asked to identify items/experiences and how they
influenced your self-concept and communication. Basically, you’re
doing an expanded version of this on another person. At a
minimum, you should ask the following types of questions. These
are just starter questions.

background/history?
2. What words/phrases would you use to describe yourself?
Why?
3. Who has been uential in your life (good or bad)? Why?
4. THIS QUESTION WILL GUIDE YOUR ESSAY THE MOST:
If you had to identify four experiences/events/or people that
had the biggest impact on your life, what would they be and
why? Tell me about each one in detail.
5. What would you say were some of the biggest challenges
you’ve faced in your life?
Step 3: Reflection
After your interview, summarize your experience in a reflective
essay that provides a thorough analysis of at least FOUR life
events/experiences/values/people you believe have shaped their

their background

Roman font, 1 inch margins, proof-read for grammar/spelling
mistakes (excessive errors will result in point deductions)
The purpose of this assignment is to explore and understand the
ways in which identity, self-concept, perception, and culture
influences the way we communicate. This assignment is also
designed to help you improve your ability to communicate
competently during interpersonal interactions.
Step 1: Selection
Choose one person in your life that you would like to know on a
deeper level (ex: grandparent, parent, friend, coworker, etc.). You
will be interviewing this person about major life events,
experiences, influential people in their lives, etc. and then reflecting
on how those experiences impact the individual’s communication.
The interview does not have to happen in-person (and should not
impede on social distancing efforts); a phone interview or
Facetime/Skype is acceptable. Email or text interviews will not be
accepted. As we’ve learned, these forms of communication are
often impersonal and provide very few opportunities for nonverbal
interactions.
