MA 278 Rasmussen College Professional Identity of the Nurse Report

Directions:

The treatment of chronic pain conditions, especially muscle pain within the medical field, presents multiple problems and complications. Studies have placed the prevalence of chronic pain in the United States from 30-33% of the population. Currently, a common medical practice is the prescription of opioid analgesics (painkillers) such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and codeine to provide pain relief. However, the abuse and addiction to opioid prescriptions has been on the rise.

Conduct some research on the pros and cons of using opioid medications to treat chronic pain. As of early 2018, 23 states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation to legalize medicinal marijuana as a treatment therapy for various issues, including chronic pain conditions. Research the pros and cons of medicinal marijuana to treat chronic pain.

From your research, what do you perceive to be the better option in treating chronic pain — prescription opioid medications or medicinal marijuana? Make sure you elaborate on your reasoning with your research, opinion(s) and any other comments you have on this topic. Provide appropriate citations for your resources.

PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY
2
Role of the Nurse and Scope of Practice
For this project, the student nurse will identify the role and scope of the professional
nurse. Professional nursing includes many different areas and levels of nursing (Smith, 2019).
Use 12-pt Times New Roman throughout. Your paragraph should be at least three sentences and
double spaced. The assignment will compare and contrast nurse practice acts, roles of the
professional nurse, standards of practice, and compare and contrast the scope of practice for
each.
Role of the Registered Nurse
Describe the roles of the nurse for the program you are currently enrolled. Discuss here
the role of the nurse in the various areas of health care, part of a team, displays compassion,
caring, etc..(Buerhaus, 2019).
Scope of Practice
Identify the scope of practice for the nurse in the state where you intend to practice. Here
you will use the Board of Nursing to define the scope of practice. Examples would include
patient teaching as a Registered Nurse (Minnesota Board of Nursing, 2018).
Comparing RN and LPN Scope of Practice
Using the Nurse Practice Act for the state where you intend to practice, compare and
contrast the scope of practice for the LPN and RN (Minnesota Board of Nursing, 2018). The
differences of the scope and practice for the Registered Nurse (RN) and the Licensed Practical
Nurse (LPN) are many. The schooling is different for each and the responsibilities are varied.
Each nurse has a license to practice within their scope.
