Quantitative Research Methods
Survey Research Project
Throughout the semester, you will be conducting your own research study. This gives
you the opportunity to engage in Christian scholarship by applying what you learn each
week in class with your own personal experience. For example, this week we are
learning about topic selection, the use of theory, American Psychological Association
(APA) paper formatting, and creating the first components of any academic research
paper, the title page and abstract page in APA format.
You should begin to think about selection of a topic, the theoretical framework, and the
sources needed to begin writing an academic research paper. As a doctoral student, your
survey research has the potential to turn into a bigger research project, conference
presentation or journal publication.
Part 1 – Topic Selection
Propose a topic directly related to strategic communication that you would be interested
in researching. Choose a theoretical framework that is relevant to your topic. Keep in
mind that strategic communication crosses theoretical boundaries and pulls from a variety
of fields. This means that you may use a combination of theories from mass
communication, public relations, psychology, etc. if needed.
Part 2 – Study Design
Your quantitative survey research study must include the following components.
1. Specific hypotheses (Hs) and/or research questions (RQs)
a. Hs/RQs must be based on existing theory and research.
2. A specific theory/theoretical framework (uses/expands on existing theory)
3. Data collection through an original survey questionnaire
a. Note: Data should be linked to each measured variable you are using
in your study.
4. Data analysis through the use of applied statistics using SPSS
5. Written results addressing/answering the Hs or RQs
6. Discussion section to include what your results mean to the reader, to the field
of study, to practitioners, etc.
7. Future Research/Limitations section including the need for project replication
or additional topic research and what, if any, limitations exist in your study.
1
Your chosen topic must be uploaded to the Week 3 Survey Topic and Research Objective
Assignment link by the due date listed in Blackboard.
Part 3 Guidelines
Please make sure your survey research study follows the following guidelines.
1. Your sample size needs to be a minimum of 100-120 for parametric statistics,
depending on the number of independent variables, and 30-40 for nonparametric statistics, depending on the number of variables analyzed.
a. Note: For conference or journal submission, the sample size must be
larger.
2. You may only use 2-4 research questions (RQs) and/or hypotheses (Hs). You
may combine the two if your topic/study calls for it.
3. Your APA formatted research paper, including Abstract and References,
should be 20-25 pages long. This includes the typical academic research
paper sections, which are the Introduction, Literature Review, Method,
Results, Discussion, and Future Research/Limitations.
4. You will need to complete an IRB form (for human subjects’ review) for
Regent University found at the link below. Most of your projects will be
“exempt.” Just follow the online instructions and submit your completed form
to Dr. Mary Myers at marymye@regent.edu. As soon as your forms have
been approved, you will be notified.
