The purpose of this presentation is to reveal how the needs of LGBT people in China were
exposed and what the community considers to be realistic and reasonable treatment. It goes
against the popular belief that, LGBTQIA+ people do not have legal rights or privileges as
heterosexual or cisgender people in China. According to Liang (2022), since 2001,
homosexuality has been classified as a mental disease and is heavily suppressed. Same-sex
couples cannot marry or be allowed to adopt in China when both LGBT and non-LGBT people
have different legal rights. As time goes by, the Chinese are becoming more accepting where
homophobic violence has been rare. The courts have given a few gay-friendly verdicts, and a
new facility in Shanghai now serves transsexual children.
Another example of the LGBT community in China is Beijing’s gay community. It provides a
safe, welcoming atmosphere for Beijing’s LGBT+ community, through events and support.
Nights at the progressive Destination or Funky (next to each other) are easy and fun. In China,
the Beijing LGBT Center is a non-profit organization keen to promote the rights of China’s
LGBT+ community.
Few will accept that the State or its rules purposefully target homosexuality. Some say Xi
Jinping’s increasingly conformist and conservative policies have harmed the LGBTQ
community. Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong all have thriving LGBT communities, but public
displays and pride festivals are rare in China since the government limits all forms of public
protest.
