Experiment (online) – Wave on a String
LAB MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
When we think about what a wave is, we usually think about waves crashing
down at the beach or fans creating a wave at a football game. The truth is,
there are waves all around us in our everyday lives. Sound waves, radio waves,
microwaves, etc. are all examples of a wave. Waves are disturbances that
move energy from one place to another. The substance with which the wave
moves through is called the medium. One thing that must be understood about
waves is that they do not transfer matter, but they do transfer energy.
AIM
To learn about different wave properties.
EQUIPMENT
PhET Interactive Simulations (web application)
PROCEDURE
1. Access PhET interactive Wave on a String simulation by clicking on
the following link: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/wave-on-astring/latest/wave-on-a-string_en.html
2. Take a few moments to play with the simulation and become familiar
with its settings.
3. Next, adjust the simulator’s settings us the following parameters:
• Select oscillate.
• Set tension to High.
• Set Damping to None
• Set the amplitude to 0.75 cm.
• Set the frequency value to Freq. 1 as assigned to you in this list: click
here.
• Select the Rulers checkbox.
• Select the Reference Line checkbox
• Select No End.

4. Select the Slow-Motion checkbox and Click the Play button.
5. Using the pause button, freeze the wave when you observe a perfect
sine waveform. Utilizing the simulator’s horizontal ruler and
reference line tool, measure the wavelength of the waveform as shown
in Figure 1. Remember that the wavelength of a wave is the
distance from crest to crest or from trough to trough.
6. Record the measured wavelength(cm) plus the calculated wave speed
including the inverse frequency(time) in Table 1. When calculating
the speed of a wave, use the relationship 𝑣 =𝜆𝑓.
7. Now, measure the wavelength for the remaining frequencies shown in
Table 1 and calculate/record their required parameters.
8. Repeat the process of Freq. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and complete Table 1.
